1. Present: Blaine McLeod in the chair and members Brad Crassweller, Hon. Jamie Martens, Don McBean,* Megan Patterson, and Nicole Sarauer.*

2. The Chair presided over the election of a Deputy Chair. Jacqueline Roy was nominated for the position. There being no further nominations, it was moved by Nicole Sarauer:
That Jacqueline Roy be elected to preside as Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs and Justice.
The question being put, it was agreed to.
3. The committee considered Bill No. 56, The King’s Bench Amendment Act, 2026 / Loi modificative de 2026 sur la Cour du Banc du Roi.
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General and the following officials
appeared before the committee and answered questions:

4. The questions being put on clauses 1 to 4, they were agreed to.
5. During consideration of clause 5, it was moved by the Hon. Jamie Martens:

Amend section 3.1-2, as being enacted by Clause
5 of the printed Bill, by striking out subsection (2) and substituting the
following:
“(2) No person is eligible to be
appointed as an associate judge unless the person is a member in good standing
of the bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada and has been such a
member for at least 10 years immediately preceding the day on which the person
is appointed.
“(3) The chief justice shall:
(a) review applications for the
position of associate judge; and
(b) make recommendations to the
minister regarding proposed appointments to the position of associate judge”.
